We don’t “do presents” in our house for Mother’s or Father’s Day. As all presents are funded out of consolidated revenue we figure either we would have already bought it, or we don’t need to spend the money.
Special efforts are made on the day however, and I can tell you about one Mummy who is seriously looking forward to a sleep in! I also wouldn’t reject flowers, and I do like a hot breakfast when it’s been cooked for me. A bit of kiddy craft on the breakfast tray is also a nice touch - DSO are you reading this?
For the first time there is a “gift” which has been lovingly prepared by one of the kids without DSO or my input. Big Sis came home from Kinder on Thursday and demanded that I hide a small parcel from myself - “until Mother’s Day”! I’ve snuck it out for the photo above.
The real treat of the day is to get a mini-break from usual mothering duties - like feeding two kids who wake up starving at the crack of dawn their breakfast! As a mother of 2 and half I did observe today that there is actually no way to have a mini-break from the “half” in my tummy. If I could (which I can’t) I’d arrange a Mothers Day feast - full of foods pregnant woman are denied.
The menu would go something like this:
- a bottle of champagne
- smoked salmon
- 2 dozen oysters
- salami
- ham, proscuitto and rare roast beef
- sushi
- pate
- steak tar-tare
- a hot dog (I don’t even normally like these, but its amazing what you crave when you can’t have it!)
- a huge array of soft cheeses
- a bottle of red wine
This led me to thinking - do women in other cultures follow the rules of avoiding foods that may contain listeria? Do Japanese women give up sushi, do French women cut back on the wine and give up soft cheese? Perhaps someone out there in internet land can enlighten me?
Anyway, as this particular form of mini-break is not possible I’ll have to leave my feast until next year - DSO are you still reading?
