At the beginning of the kids swimming class there is always a tussle where I try to get Big Sis into her goggles and cap. Trust me, putting a swimming cap and goggles on another human being isn’t as easy as it looks - and it’s made harder by the fact that, predicting my clumsiness, Big Sis jumps around on one foot making “ow, ow, ow” noises on the top of her voice.
Embarrassingly, the woman I sit next to has a 3 year old in Big Sis’ class, and manages to get her fully kitted out without any shouting or near hysteria. To make matters worse, she helped Big Sis into her gear a couple of weeks ago while I was being distracted by Little Bro. Now, Big Sis grasping her cap and goggles scans the pool looking for this Good Samaritan and insists she put them on!
By way of explanation of her dexterity the kind lady quietly informed me that her little girl is the youngest of 4 kids. So, I suppose, by the time Tertius/Tertia is up for swimming lessons maybe I’ll be in the enviable position of helping some newbie mum attach cap and goggles in a swift and painless manner? I just hope our new friends turn up every lesson for the rest of the term - otherwise we are sunk, so to speak!
