A Bump of the Inevitable

This morning I remembered working in the real world and enjoying a game called buzzword bingo. The inevitability of words like synergize, heads-up, client focus - just to name a few, used to drive me crazy! I would while away many hours in meetings playing a subtle game of buzzword bingo in the margins of my notepad. For all those interested this buzzword bingo site randomly generates bingo cards.

There are lots of inevitabilities in my current life as well, and I thought maybe there were a few games I could play with myself to keep me amused on the inside. The first that occured to me was guess how many time Little Bro would crack his head on furniture and/or walls before 9am.

He is at that stage where just about everything is at head height, the kitchen table in particular. This is dangerously combined with that ballistic high energy that only a 16 month old knows (what I could do with that toddler energy!). He’s also an inventive little boy and finds quite novel ways of flirting with head injury - this morning he rolled my fitball into our narrow corridor and spent some time climbing on top only to roll off slamming head into the wall. Perhaps I should source a light weight helmet for him to wear 24/7 for a few months? I do, however, fear the stigma of overprotective mother.

Later in the morning we visited Ikea, which is one of those places I didn’t see the point of before kids, and now you can’t keep me out of! There are so many cheap storage solutions - and these days it’s certainly storage solutions I’m after! Please refer to this earlier post. Anyway, observing checkout behaviour I thought of another game, guessing how much you have spent at Ikea before they ring it through.

I always think I’ve spent about $30 and invariably seem to have spent over $100. I think this is a common issue as I observed about 90% of the people leaving the checkout pausing a few metres away gazing in disbelief at their receipt, pawing through their bags or trolley of flat boxes for a while, before shaking their head walking towards their car.  Maybe that could be the game - the first to spot 5 people who have obviously spent much more than they intended at the IKEA checkout shouts - bingo (or whatever it translates to in Swedish)!
