38 Degrees and Rising

Before Kids I didn’t worry much about the weather. I rarely remember ever looking at the weather report. Sure, if I happened to catch it on TV I might see what it would be like for the weekend, but only with passing interest.

These days the weather has become an obsession! I check it on the internet at every opportunity. If I see something I don’t like, a 38 degree weekend for example, I compulsively check it over and over throughout the day to see if it is revised. I feel like a gambling addict, without the gambling. It’s like compulsively watching the poker machines without putting any money in.

The thing is that these days the weather has such a huge impact on the kind of day Big Sis, Little Bro and I have. For example, if its 24 degrees we might pack a picnic, go for a big walk with Dog, meet friends and play in the park. If it’s 32 degrees we might get out of the house early before it heats up and have a swim at the local pool, maybe walk to a nearby cafe afterwards for a milkshake, and once everyone is well and truly exhausted back for sleeps as it heats up.

A 38 degree day on the other hand is baton down the hatches! Shut the door, turn on the fans, check we have enough icy-poles and boot up the dvd player. Seriously, you can do nothing with kids in that kind of heat. Give us a couple of days of it in a row and cabin fever is too mild a word. Try cabin fever in a sauna with a 3 and 1 year old.

Anyway, I need to steel myself because we are in for a hot one this weekend (38 degrees in fact), at least DSO will be home to share it with us. Actually I better go now - I just need to check if the forecast has been updated……
