Dig dig

Dig Dig

The Council are fixing up the street behind us. There’s lots of noise and heavy machinery. Before Kids I would have thought of this as an inconvenience, not these days - it is an entertainment/educational opportunity!

Little Bro is obsessed with the work site (please see entry about gender differences). As soon as he hears the machines he yells “Dig Dig!” on the top of his voice with one arm raised to the sky, finger pointed. He says this over and over through the day and scours the toy box for toys that resemble earth moving machinery.

So at least 3 times a day I’m prevailed upon to walk out to the work site and check on the progress. Once in front of the action Little Bro goes silent and watches in awe as the Dig Digs do their work. Big Sis on the other hand sees it as a social opportunity. There are lots of kids in our area so there are usually at least 1 or 2 other families watching proceedings so Big Sis spends her time greeting friends new and old, and trying to get a game or conversation established!

What I have realised is that I am almost completely ignorant of what different machines are called and what they do, so after making up answers to Big Sis’ questions for a couple of days I thought she might be onto me, so I’ve done a little bit of research. Check out general earth moving equipment and trucks.

I’m not sure how I’ll deal with Little Bros disappointment when the show is over. I suspect we may be spending some time cruising the neighborhood looking for other construction sites. Maybe I should ask the council to advertise them on their website for ease of all parents in the area? All we would need then is a mobile coffee cart and mothers groups could meet for hours on the sidelines!

I’ve also found “Bob the Builder” to be highly informative about machinery, via the machines names “Dizzy” (cement mixer), “Scoop” (some sort of scooping device), “Lofty” (cherry picker), etc. Also fairly true to life OHS standards …

We love a show that educates the parents as well, and I don’t believe those rumours about Bob anyway - do you??

Hmm, I think the jury might be out. His compatriot Wendy seems mighty frustrated, although she may have something going on with the scarecrow
